About Us

Randolph Chen, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist who has been in practice for more than 20 years. At his practice in Burlingame, California, Dr. Chen focuses on providing patients with comprehensive kidney care. 

Dr. Chen completed his bachelor’s degree in biology and psycholoy at the University of California, Irvine, in Irvine, California in 1995. He graduated cum laude and received honors for his work in experimental psychology. 

In 1999, Dr. Chen earned his medical doctorate with honors from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

After graduation, Dr. Chen completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the prestigious UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, before returning there to finish his nephrology fellowship in 2005.

At his Burlingame practice, Dr. Chen identifies and treats a wide range of conditions that affect kidney function, including chronic kidney disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), acid base and electrolyte disorders, kidney stones, and bone and mineral disorders.  One of his goals is to keep his patients’ kidneys in healthy function to avoid dialysis.

If patients do need dialysis, Dr. Chen partners with several nearby hospitals and medical centers, including Satellite Healthcare, to deliver expert care for patients requiring dialysis.

Dr. Chen understands the effects kidney damage can have on patients and families.  He treats his patients and their loved ones with the utmost compassion and makes sure the treatment process is collaborative.

As a leader in the field of nephrology, Dr. Chen has won several awards and remains active in a variety of leadership roles.  He serves as medical director, medical consultant  and board member in different healthcare organizations.

Mabel Smith, RN, MSN, AGPCNP, is a nationally board-certified nurse practitioner committed to delivering compassionate and comprehensive and patient-centered care.  

Mabel has 23 years of experience in nephrology, including roles as a dialysis nurse anda nurse manager across various settings, including hospitals and outpatient dialysis centers. She has worked with diverse patient populations, consistently advocating for their rights and ensuring they receive the highest standard of care.

At the dialysis center, she provided education on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the different dialysis modalities to empower patients and those approaching dialysis. She addressed patient and family questions to help them make informed decisions and plan treatments that align with their lifestyles.

At the dialysis center, she collaborates with Dr. Chen, dietitians, and social workers to develop holistic and individualized care plans for each patient. She strongly supports involving family members in the care process to enhance patient's ; mental health and motivation, improving health outcomes.

In 2023, Mabel earned her masters degree in nursing with honors, specializing in Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her clinical training included rotations in Internal Medicine with Dr. Tony Wong and Dr. Hermenegildo Angeles Internal Medicine practice at Seton Medical Center and Nephrology with Dr. Chen and Darlene, NP, at Dr. Chen's Nephrology practice. 

Mabel joined Dr. Chen's Nephrology practice because she aligned with his mission andvalues, emphasizing high-quality care, deep connection with patients, and patient-centered care. She values the practice's commitment to comprehensive treatment, patient education, empowerment, and shared decision-making. Her goal is to help patients and their families proactively manage comorbidities, aiming to delay or prevent the need for dialysis treatment.
